In the Senate, women hold 25 of 100 seats, tying the record number they held in the 116th Congress. A record 128 women are serving in the newly elected House, accounting for 29% of the chamber’s total. That represents a 59% increase from the 96 women who were serving in the 112th Congress a decade ago, though it remains far below women’s share of the overall U.S. history and a considerable increase from where things stood even a decade ago.Ĭounting both the House of Representatives and the Senate, women account for 153 of 540 voting and nonvoting members of Congress. ![]() ![]() Russia’s social, political and cultural history is always a fascinating subject, and although fictional, The Fabergé Secret paints a truly vivid picture, bringing this particular period in history very much to life. As their relationship develops, Katya exposes Dimitri to the horrors of the Tsar's regime and the persecution of the Jewish people, and he grows determined to make a stand. When she meets Dimitri at a royal ball, she immediately recognizes a kindred spirit, and an unlikely affair begins between them. Educated and passionate, Doctor Katya Golitsyn is determined to help end Russian oppression. What did these people do to deserve such brutality? The tsar tells him the Jews themselves were to blame, but Dimitri can't forget what he's seen. But when Dimitri is confronted by the death and destruction wrought by a pogrom, he is taken aback. ![]() Cocooned by the glittering wealth of the Imperial court, the talented architect lives a life of luxury and comfort, by the side of his beautiful but spiteful wife, Princess Lara. Taking the time to do this can feel very awkward for the writer, but Andrews does it deftly. When new settings or characters are introduced, Andrews paints succinct and vivid pictures, clearly outlining the features of interest to the reader in a way that makes them come alive in the mind’s eye. Andrews is a detail-oriented writer (properly, Andrews is a detail-oriented set of writers, since Ilona and Gordon co-write these books). Despite how quickly paced Andrews’ novels are, the author does not make this mistake. I tend to write this POV the way that I would tell a story to a friend - that is to say, I skip over important details. ![]() First person past tense is one of the hardest POVs for me to write. ![]() ![]() Ilona Andrews writes very tight, snappy prose, usually in first person past tense. Here’s what I think the secret is to why these books speak to so many readers. I also wanted to figure out what it is about Ilona Andrews’ work that is so much fun to read, in the hopes of being able to apply some lessons to my own writing. Back in 2020 I re-read the entire Kate Daniels series from start to finish in anticipation of the release of Blood Heir in January 2021 (reviewed in January’s Reading Round-up). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I cheered for this couple and their new family, from page one, and was left with a huge dreamy smile by the last page. I loved all of the secondary characters in this series as well, and Sandra redeemed herself beautifully in this story. It was wonderful to watch them gain their footing as parents and be able to see that they wouldn’t lose themselves, and that they could have help and not relinquish their responsibilities. This is the real and romantic and just completely perfect final chapter for this couple. Tru Smoke, Tru Burn, Tru Flame: Ember Park series by Edie Danford – From Tru Flame: I have to say I really just loved this story. Together they have to overcome Bryan’s fear and tendency to protect himself at all costs. Oliver is such a lovely guy, truly a good man who is so right for Bryan in pretty much every way. Bryan has a lot going on and some of the crap that he has to deal with is pretty intense. This story is so well written although, if you’re not a fan of angst, you might have a tough go of it. ![]() I wasn’t a huge fan of the first three books in this series, and I’ve yet to read book four even though I bought right when it was released.
